DESCRIPTION:
Porsche introduced the original GT3 in 1999 as a homologation model for the 996 variant FIA cup racing series, taking over from the previous generation air-cooled RS models.
In 2003, Porsche introduced the RS variant of the GT3, a much more track focused ‘RennSport’ with more weight saving measures such as a polycarbonate rear window, carbon fibre front hood and a more aggressive aero package featuring a large rear wing.
Chassis upgrades included progressive springs and uprated dampers, adjustable front and rear control arms, fully adjustable top mounts could be adjusted to offer cup car settings if required. The wheel carriers for the RS were also totally redesigned to maximise camber control.
Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) offering more heat and fade resistance than standard steel brakes were available as an option.
The GT3RS also had a more aggressive aero package with the large carbon rear wing delivering 35kg (77lb) of downforce at 125mph whilst a ram-air intake duct on top of the engine cover actually helped to increase engine power at higher speeds.
The GT3 engine was also upgraded with upgraded cylinder heads and exhaust ports and although Porsches ‘official’ figure stated 381bhp, dyno testing showed the engines were closer to 400bhp.
Internally the track focused theme was continued with lightweight bucket racing seats, a factory fitted safety cage and many of the ‘comfort’ options such as air conditioning either deleted or offered as options.
Performance and handling characteristics were such that the RS completed a tap of the Nurburgring in 7:43, 4 seconds faster than the twin turbo 996 GT2 of the time.
All the cars were finished in white with either Red or Blue decals & wheel centres, an historical link back to the Carrera 2.7 RS of the early 1970’s.
The 996 GT3RS production ran from 2003 to 2005 with a total production of 682 units and just 140 right hand drive cars, 113 of which were officially registered in the UK. The 996 GT3RS was not offered for sale in the United States or Canada and the low production numbers make the 996 GT3RS second only to the 997 GT3RS 4.0 in rarity.
This particular example finished with Blue detailing was ordered with several options, most of which make the car more suitable to longer journeys such as European touring with Automatic air-conditioning and Becker Radio CD on the specification.
The car presents beautifully with no marks or damage to the Carrara White paintwork. The colour coded alloy wheels are also in superb condition with pristine paintwork and no kerb damage to the polished rims. Four matching ‘N rated’ Michelin Pilot Sport tyres are fitted and in good order.
The car was ordered new with the PCCB brakes option. The current owner has recently had new replacement steel brakes fitted in order to preserve the original ceramic brakes. The new high performance 2-piece GiroDisc brakes fitted are specifically designed as a GT3 / GT2 upgrade and make use and maintenance of the car much more straight forwards and cost effective whilst maintaining excellent racing developed performance and technology.
The original PCCB brake components now reside in a beautifully designed and made custom storage box finished in matching Riviera Blue which will be supplied with the car allowing the system to be re-fitted to the GT3RS in the future if so desired.
Inside the cabin the theme continues with the lightweight GT3 racing seats, carpets and trim all presented in superb condition with no major signs of wear. The Factory fitted centre console finished in body colour adds a touch of relief to the black interior and matches the safety cage which still retains its factory fitted foam protection around the ‘A’ pillars and door tops. The Alcantara trimmed steering wheel, gear lever and switchgear are also in unmarked condition.
The GT3RS is also supplied with a high quality custom fitted indoor car cover.
