The XJ-S was presented on 10 September 1975 at the Frankfurt Motor Show but only the following year did it actually go into production.
More than anything else a Granturismo, performance in line with Jaguar tradition, so much so that the version with manual gearbox reached 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds and reached 245 km / h despite the weight.
The reception reserved for the car was rather lukewarm compared to that reserved for the E-Type in 1961, but the ancestor was a revolutionary one, while the XJS was decidedly more traditional mechanically and stylistically it was less engaging.
The car's design was the subject of criticism, a sober and elegant but not very sporty line.
In particular, the two extravagant rear "fins" of which there was no direct relationship with the sinuous E-Type.
Inside, the wooden inserts on the dashboard were eliminated, replaced by the sportier brushed aluminum. Subsequently, thanks to the complaints of Jaguar customers, wood once again took the place of aluminum on the car.
The XJS was already born in compliance with the strict US safety and anti-pollution regulations, so these cars differ from their European sisters only for the presence of specific external fittings and above all for the presence of four single round headlights instead of the two oval headlights.
